Why plan the route first
Tianmen Mountain's highlights are spread across the cableway, the summit loop, Tianmen Cave and the Heaven-Linking Avenue. Different routes mean very different effort and queuing time, so choosing your entrance and direction in advance often saves one to two hours.
Routes A, B and C
Route A (large cableway up · express cableway down)
Take the large cableway from the downtown base station straight to the summit, tour the West-Line Glass Skywalk, Guigu Cliff Walk and Tianmen Mountain Temple, then ride the through-mountain escalator down to Tianmen Cave and take the express cableway down and out of the park. The least tiring option — ideal for seniors, families and first-time visitors.
Route B (express cableway up · large cableway down)
Ride the shuttle up the "99 Bends" Heaven-Linking Avenue, visit Tianmen Cave, then head to the summit and take the cableway down at the end to catch the sunset. Best for those who want the full mountain-road experience and to avoid crowds.
Route C (express cableway both ways)
Express cableway up and down, with the escalator at Tianmen Cave — no large cableway at all. The most relaxed option, good for tight schedules, limited mobility or fear of heights. Cableway queues are long in peak season — arrive when the park opens.
One-day timing reference
- 07:30 Arrive at the cableway base station; enter with your ID card
- 08:00 Ride up (about 28 min); start with the West-Line Glass Skywalk
- 10:30 Guigu Cliff Walk — Temple — West-Line Terrace
- 12:30 Light lunch and rest at the summit
- 13:30 Escalator to Tianmen Cave; climb or ride to the 999-step "Stairway to Heaven"
- 15:00 Descend by express cableway, back to downtown
Time-saving tips
- In peak season arrive half an hour before opening; cableway queues only grow.
- Do the Glass Skywalk first — afternoons are busiest on the East Line.
- You don't have to walk both loops; save your energy for Tianmen Cave.
