Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park · Answers to common questions on tickets, entry, refunds and transport
What are the opening hours? Other
Opening hours are subject to the park’s notice; call the park before you travel to confirm.
What time does Tianmen Mountain open? Other
Tianmen Mountain generally opens from about 07:30 daily; the last cableway time follows the day’s notice. We recommend allowing 5–7 hours (Route A or B), or 6–8 hours for a more relaxed full day. The summit is 5–8°C cooler than downtown, so bring a light jacket even in summer.
What time does the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show start and how long is it? Other
“Tianmen Fox Fairy · Liu Hai the Woodcutter” starts at about 20:20 each night (subject to the scenic area’s daily announcement) and runs about 90 minutes, at the Tianmen Mountain Canyon Grand Theater. We recommend arriving 30–45 minutes before the start; the gate opens about 40 minutes before the show.
Is the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show performed in winter? Other
The “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show is suspended from about December to February each year, subject to the scenic area’s notice. Spring and autumn (Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov) offer the most pleasant weather and the best visual effects. Tickets are tight during holidays, so we recommend booking 3–5 days ahead.
What if it rains during the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show? Other
The show is staged in an open canyon; light rain does not stop the show and free rain ponchos are provided — no need to bring your own. In severe weather such as heavy rain or lightning the show may be temporarily cancelled, in which case a full refund or rescheduling will be arranged.
How do I choose seats for the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show? Other
For a first visit, Zone A (standard) is recommended — slightly off-center, balancing the full view and stage details at good value; for finer details choose the VIP zone, closer to the stage to see the performers’ expressions and costumes. Families should prefer aisle seats for easy access; Zone B is more affordable.
Are there restaurants? Is food pricey at the summit? Other
The summit has simple meals, snacks and drinks, but choice is limited and prices are usually higher than downtown. Have main meals before or after the visit and carry bread, energy bars and water up.
Is there phone signal and charging at the summit? Other
Most of the summit has phone signal, but some walkways and tunnels are weak; charging facilities are limited. Charge up and bring a power bank — phone batteries drain faster in the cold.
Are the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show ticket and the mountain ticket separate? Other
They are separate ticket types: the mountain ticket does not include the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show — buy the show ticket separately. Book each for your itinerary, and book ahead in peak season.
Should I stay downtown or in Wulingyuan? Other
For Tianmen Mountain only, stay downtown (near the cableway base station); for the Forest Park only, stay near the Wulingyuan entrance; if doing both, stay one night each or pick one — about an hour apart. Book early in peak season.
What food is a must-try in Zhangjiajie? Other
Try the Tujia three-pot hotpot (sandixiaguo), sour fish/pork, she-rice, Western-Hunan cured meats and Zhangjiajie rice noodles. Local food is spicy — ask for mild or no chili; in-park restaurants are pricier, so have main meals downtown.
