Choosing the right route matters most

Prefer Route A or C: they rely mainly on the cableway and the through-mountain escalator with little vertical climbing, so seniors and children tire less. Route B's Heaven-Linking Avenue has many bends — avoid it if you get carsick.

Which highlights to keep

  • Recommended: Tianmen Cave (take the escalator to skip the climb), the Temple, and the gentle parts of the summit loop.
  • As energy allows: the Glass Skywalk needs shoe covers; those afraid of heights can take the inner ordinary walkway.
  • Can skip: the steep West-Line stair flights, to avoid exhaustion.

Safety and comfort

  • The summit is much cooler — bring an extra jacket for children and seniors.
  • Walkways run along cliffs; hold children's hands and don't stop for photos by the railings.
  • Carry water and snacks; dining at the summit is limited and pricey.
  • At busy times agree on a meeting point and prepare for getting separated; give children a contact card.

Accessibility and convenience

The cableway and escalator cut most of the stairs. Wheelchairs and strollers are relatively manageable at the cableway stations and escalator sections, but some summit walkways still have steps, so two people helping is advised. Check on-site guidance for the current accessible facilities.

FAQ

Is Tianmen Mountain suitable for seniors and children?
Yes. Choose Route A or C — mainly cableway and through-mountain escalator with fewer steps, easy for seniors and children. Still mind walkway safety, hold children’s hands and keep warm.
How do I drive there and can I drive up the mountain?
Search for “Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park” or “Tianmen Mountain Cableway Parking” in navigation. The scenic area has a large parking lot beside the cableway lower station. Private cars are strictly forbidden on the Heaven-Linking Avenue; internal traffic is managed by the scenic area, and all visitors must transfer to the park’s shuttle transport up the mountain.
How many routes are there at Tianmen Mountain? How do I choose A/B/C?
Tianmen Mountain has three routes: Route A (classic) — large cableway up + express cableway down, more spectacular going up, good for a first visit; Route B — express cableway up + large cableway down, good for off-peak and afternoon departures, seeing Tianmen Cave first then the summit; Route C (all express) — express cableway up and down, efficient and convenient, with no large cableway, good for those seeking efficiency or afraid of heights.
What should I watch out for in winter?
In winter the summit often has snow and rime ice and can be below 0°C — wear a down jacket and warm, non-slip shoes. Some walkways may close temporarily due to ice; check the park’s notice and the day’s openings before you go.
