Why plan your arrival time

The Tianmen Mountain cableway is about 7,455 m long — one of the world’s longest high-mountain cableways — with a ride of about 28 minutes. In peak season (especially summer and National Day) a 1–2 hour queue is common, and your wait depends mostly on when you reach the base station. Arriving half an hour earlier often saves an hour.

Best time to enter

  • In peak season, arrive at the base station at 07:00–07:30 and aim for the first gondolas;
  • Off-season, around 08:00 is fine as crowds are spread out;
  • Avoid the 09:30–11:00 group-tour peak.

Easiest way to buy tickets

Book online with real-name registration in advance — far quicker than queuing at the counter. After booking, enter by verifying your ID card or the original document used for booking at the gate; you usually don’t need to exchange for a paper ticket.

Beating the crowds

  • Travel on weekdays during peak season;
  • Rainy days or the clear day after snow are often quieter, with a better chance of the sea of clouds;
  • If Route A (large cableway up) is too crowded, consider Route B (express cableway up, large cableway down).

While you queue

  • The summit is 5–8°C cooler and queues are windy — bring a jacket;
  • Carry water and a few snacks, and keep children and seniors warm;
  • Check the day’s notice — the cableway may pause in strong wind or thunderstorms.

FAQ

How long are the cableway queues and how do I wait less?
In peak season queues often run 1–2 hours, shorter off-season. Arrive at the base station at 07:00–07:30 for the first gondolas in peak season, book online with real-name registration to skip the counter queue, and avoid the 09:30–11:00 group peak.
Which train station is closest and how do I reach the cableway station?
Zhangjiajie Station (conventional trains) recommended: about 1–2 km from the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station, a 10–20 minute walk; bus routes 5 or 6 take about 10–15 minutes (CNY 1–2); taxi / ride-hailing about 5 minutes (about CNY 10–15). Zhangjiajie West Station (high-speed rail): about 10 km from the cableway lower station, requiring a transfer; taxi / ride-hailing about 20–30 minutes (about CNY 30–40); bus 17 takes about 40–60 minutes.
How many routes are there at Tianmen Mountain? How do I choose A/B/C?
Tianmen Mountain has three routes: Route A (classic) — large cableway up + express cableway down, more spectacular going up, good for a first visit; Route B — express cableway up + large cableway down, good for off-peak and afternoon departures, seeing Tianmen Cave first then the summit; Route C (all express) — express cableway up and down, efficient and convenient, with no large cableway, good for those seeking efficiency or afraid of heights.
Do I need a separate ticket for the cableway?
No. The cableway is the scenic area’s unified transport and is included with the park ticket — no separate purchase. Details follow the ticket-type notes and the day’s notice.
