Pick the area by itinerary

  • Tianmen Mountain only: stay downtown (near the cableway base station) — fastest access;
  • Forest Park only: stay near the Wulingyuan entrance to cut travel time;
  • Both: either is fine, about a one-hour drive apart; you could also stay one night in each.

Hotel or guesthouse

  • Hotels: standardized service, breakfast and parking, good for families;
  • Guesthouses/inns: flexible locations with local character, good for groups and slow travel;
  • In peak season, “free cancellation” bookings are safer.

Booking notes

  • Book early for peak season and holidays — last-minute prices are high and choice is thin;
  • Check whether the location is really near the cableway/entrance, not just labelled “Zhangjiajie”;
  • Read reviews for “soundproofing”, “hot water” and “parking”.

Stay tips

  • To catch the first gondolas, stay close to the cableway base station;
  • With lots of luggage, store it downtown and go up light;
  • Mountain areas are damp and cold — rooms with heating/AC are more comfortable.

FAQ

Should I stay downtown or in Wulingyuan?
For Tianmen Mountain only, stay downtown (near the cableway base station); for the Forest Park only, stay near the Wulingyuan entrance; if doing both, stay one night each or pick one — about an hour apart. Book early in peak season.
What is the difference between Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan)?
Tianmen Mountain is defined by Tianmen Cave, the Glass Skywalk, the Heaven-Linking Avenue and the cableway, and can be done in a day; Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan) centres on the sandstone peaks of Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan and Golden Whip Stream, and is large — usually 2–3 days. They differ in style; visit both if time allows.
How do I get to Tianmen Mountain? Is it far from downtown Zhangjiajie?
The Tianmen Mountain cableway base station is in downtown Zhangjiajie, close to the railway and bus stations — easy by taxi or bus. Drivers can navigate to the base-station car park.
Which train station is closest and how do I reach the cableway station?
Zhangjiajie Station (conventional trains) recommended: about 1–2 km from the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station, a 10–20 minute walk; bus routes 5 or 6 take about 10–15 minutes (CNY 1–2); taxi / ride-hailing about 5 minutes (about CNY 10–15). Zhangjiajie West Station (high-speed rail): about 10 km from the cableway lower station, requiring a transfer; taxi / ride-hailing about 20–30 minutes (about CNY 30–40); bus 17 takes about 40–60 minutes.
