About the cableway

The Tianmen Mountain cableway runs from downtown straight to the summit, over 7 km long and among the world’s longest high-mountain passenger ropeways. On the way you overlook gorges, farmland and the winding road — the ride itself is a sight.

How to ride

  • Board at the base station with your ticket; Routes A/B/C refer to different combinations of the large cableway and the express cableway up and down;
  • Upbound queues are long in peak season — arrive early;
  • Do not stand or sway in the cabin; follow staff guidance and look after children and seniors with you.

Waiting times

  • Smooth and short in the off-season; busiest around the first cabins in peak season and on holidays;
  • Entering early saves a lot of waiting — watch the park’s live notices;
  • In strong wind, thunderstorms or ice the cableway may close temporarily — keep your itinerary flexible.

Heights and tips

  • If you fear heights, keep to the inner side and look into the distance rather than down the whole way;
  • The summit differs sharply in temperature from the base — bring a jacket;
  • Hold steady when shooting and don’t lean out of the cabin.

FAQ

How long are the cableway queues and how do I wait less?
In peak season queues often run 1–2 hours, shorter off-season. Arrive at the base station at 07:00–07:30 for the first gondolas in peak season, book online with real-name registration to skip the counter queue, and avoid the 09:30–11:00 group peak.
Which train station is closest and how do I reach the cableway station?
Zhangjiajie Station (conventional trains) recommended: about 1–2 km from the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station, a 10–20 minute walk; bus routes 5 or 6 take about 10–15 minutes (CNY 1–2); taxi / ride-hailing about 5 minutes (about CNY 10–15). Zhangjiajie West Station (high-speed rail): about 10 km from the cableway lower station, requiring a transfer; taxi / ride-hailing about 20–30 minutes (about CNY 30–40); bus 17 takes about 40–60 minutes.
Do I need a separate ticket for the cableway?
No. The cableway is the scenic area’s unified transport and is included with the park ticket — no separate purchase. Details follow the ticket-type notes and the day’s notice.
What should I watch out for in winter?
In winter the summit often has snow and rime ice and can be below 0°C — wear a down jacket and warm, non-slip shoes. Some walkways may close temporarily due to ice; check the park’s notice and the day’s openings before you go.
