Before You Go
Book tickets (most important): Be sure to book online with your real name in advance (at least 7 days in peak season); in peak season (May–Oct) on-site purchase may not get you in. When booking, choose the specific visit date, route (A/B/C) and entry time slot, and enter the scenic area with your ID card.
Watch the weather: Monitor the forecast 3 days before and on the day of departure. Mountain weather is changeable — you may experience sun, rain and fog within a single day, so be prepared.
Dress advice: Even in summer the summit is 5–8°C cooler than downtown with stronger wind; bring a light jacket or sun-protective clothing; when rain is forecast, a shell jacket is the best choice. Shoes must be comfortable, non-slip sports or hiking shoes — there is a lot of walking on the summit.
Must-have checklist: ID card (required to scan in), power bank, sun protection, rain poncho/umbrella, dry food and drinking water (dining on the mountain is pricier), comfortable sports shoes.
Route A Classic Walkthrough (about 5–7 hours)
- Check in at the cableway lower station: Arrive at the lower station on Guanli Road about 30 minutes before your booked slot, scan your ID card through the gate and queue for the cableway. Queues are longer in peak season — allow plenty of time.
- Take the large cableway up (about 28 min): The first half flies over city and countryside; the second suddenly climbs into misty peaks, with the 99 bends of the Heaven-Linking Avenue below — a powerful visual experience.
- Summit loop (about 3–4 hours): First the West Line (the highlight, about 2.7 km) — Lingxiao Terrace (the best spot to overlook Zhangjiajie city), Guigu Cliff Walk, the Glass Skywalk (West Line, shoe covers required), Tianmen Mountain Temple; then the East Line — the Glass Skywalk (East Line · Panlong Cliff), the Love Corridor, etc., ending back at the upper cableway station.
- Through-mountain escalator down to Tianmen Cave (about 20 min): Experience the engineering wonder inside the tunnel.
- Visit Tianmen Cave (about 30–60 min): Take on the 999-step Heaven-Linking Stairs, or take the sightseeing escalator beside the stairs (extra charge) for an easier ascent. Looking up at Tianmen Cave from the square is breathtakingly grand — a superb photo spot.
- Take the express cableway down (about 10 min), reach the park gate and end the trip.
Route B: reverse the order above — take the express cableway up to Tianmen Cave, the through-mountain escalator to the summit, and finally the large cableway back to downtown.
Stay & Food
Where to stay: The area around the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station / city center is preferred — close to the scenic area, with mature dining and shopping and easy access to the railway and bus stations. If heading to Wulingyuan the next day, consider staying near Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station for convenience.
Where to eat: The summit has simple food outlets (fast food, instant noodles, corn, grilled sausages) at higher prices than below; bring dry food and plenty of water. Below, try Zhangjiajie specialties — sanxiaguo (spicy hot pot), Tujia cured pork (traditionally smoked) and rock-ear stewed chicken.
Beat the Crowds
Peak season (May–Oct) is busy; the following help reduce queueing: ① choose Route B or C to avoid the morning large-cableway rush; ② book entry slots after 1 or 2 pm, when tour groups are mostly heading down; ③ tour the summit in reverse — after leaving the upper station, do the East Line first, counterclockwise, to avoid the main crowd.
Photography Spots
- Heaven-Linking Avenue panorama / road wonder: from the cableway car (on the way up).
- Sunrise / sea of clouds / city panorama: Lingxiao Terrace and along the Guigu Cliff Walk.
- Tianmen Cave’s grandeur: Tianmen Cave Square; a wide-angle lens looking up works best.
- Best times: soft light at dawn and dusk with rich color layers; after rain when the clouds roll in, it is easiest to capture great shots.
Safety & Etiquette
- Those afraid of heights: some sections of the Glass Skywalk and Guigu Cliff Walk are thrilling — choose carefully or bypass them.
- Thunderstorms: the cableway and outdoor attractions may be temporarily closed; please follow the staff’s instructions and do not force your way through.
- Smoking is strictly prohibited throughout the scenic area; please protect the environment, do not litter and do not climb over railings on walkways and viewing platforms.
- Beware of tourist traps: at railway stations, airports and bus stations, be cautious of overly enthusiastic “guides” or soliciting drivers; cheap tours and so-called “inside tickets” are often traps — please buy tickets through proper channels.
